Threads Says You Unfollowed Everyone, Do Not Tap That Button Yet

A Threads follower count drop that appears overnight, together with profiles showing a Follow button for people you know you follow, comes from one of three places. The most common is an app bug: your follows are all still there and only the button is wrong. The second is Meta clearing out fake and long dormant accounts in bulk, which takes numbers off your profile without taking away a single real reader. The third is ordinary unfollowing. Before you work out which one you have, stop tapping Follow buttons. While that bug is running, the button does the opposite of what it says, and every hopeful tap costs you a follow you already had.

Your following list is the screen that tells the truth

Threads buries this one, which is irritating, because it is the single check that separates a cosmetic problem from a real loss.

Go to your profile. Tap your followers count. A list opens, and across the top of it there is a Following tab. Switch to that. There is no Following link on the profile page itself, which is why people hunt for it, fail, and conclude the app has eaten their data.

Now look up two or three of the accounts whose profiles were offering you a Follow button. Still in the list? Then you never unfollowed them. The follow is sitting safely on Meta’s servers and the profile screen is reading it wrong. Nothing has gone anywhere. If you follow a few thousand accounts and cannot face scrolling, tap Sort at the top of that list to reorder it.

If those accounts genuinely are not in the list, the follow is gone, and the next two sections are the ones for you.

The bug where the button does the opposite of what it says

Here is the reasonable reaction to seeing Follow next to someone whose posts you have read every day for two years. The app has obviously dropped your follow. So you tap it. You are being helpful. You go about your morning feeling like a person who fixes things.

Great instinct. It is correct in every other app you have ever used. You were expecting me to tell you to tap it, right?

Do not tap it.

When this fault is running, the button displays the wrong state while your tap is still processed against the state the server actually holds. The server thinks you follow the person, because you do. Your tap therefore arrives as an unfollow. The button then flips to Following, you feel like the problem is solved, and you have just deleted a real follow. Threads users hitting this in 2026 described the loop precisely: tap follow, get unfollowed, tap again, and the second one sticks, having burned the original follow somewhere in the middle. Meta confirmed at the time that it was aware of a bug affecting follows and that a fix was on the way. The same thing has resurfaced more than once since, so treat it as a recurring fault in the app rather than a single bad night.

Signs you are in it:

• Most of your feed is affected at the same moment.
• Your own following count has barely moved while individual profiles insist otherwise.
• The accounts are still sitting in your following list.
• Force quitting the app and reopening it changes what the buttons say.
• Threads itself is full of people posting about it, because it always is within about four minutes.

Wait it out. Force quit, reopen, and if the buttons are still lying, put the phone down for a few hours. Nothing you tap speeds up a fix that has to happen on Meta’s side.

The May clear-out and how it shows up in your numbers

On 6 May 2026, Meta ran an unusually large removal of bot and long dormant accounts across its apps. Most of it landed inside a window of roughly six hours, overnight for a great many people, which is exactly why so many woke up to a smaller number with no explanation anywhere on screen. Famous accounts lost followers in the millions. Smaller and mid sized creators mostly reported losing somewhere in the region of 2 to 5 percent of their total.

Threads runs on top of your Instagram account. When an account is removed at that level it stops counting as a follower in both apps at once. So a sweep aimed mainly at Instagram still moves your Threads number, downward, in a single lump, with no notification of any kind.

How this one looks different:

• The drop happens in one step. One number on Tuesday, a lower number on Wednesday, then it stays flat.
• Your following list is untouched. A sweep like this takes followers off you and leaves your own follows alone.
• Your impressions and replies do not move afterwards, because the accounts that disappeared were never reading anything.
• The accounts you can recall losing had no profile photo and four posts about a coin.

Now the part that deserves a straight answer instead of a joke. This is not reversible by you, and you should not try. Meta has said that accounts suspended in error are counted again once they have been verified, so some of a loss can come back on its own over the following weeks. Beyond that there is nothing to appeal and no service on earth that can put a removed bot account back on your profile. A drop of three or four percent leaves you with a cleaner audience and a slightly more honest engagement rate. If you lost forty percent, most of that audience was never real in the first place, which is a different conversation and usually one about something somebody bought.

Why your Threads number moved differently from your Instagram number

People compare the two counts and get confused. Threads has its own follower graph, seeded from Instagram when you signed up and shaped by everything you have done since. The overlap is large but it is not complete, and a removal wave hits whichever of your two audiences contained more junk. Losing four percent on Instagram and one percent on Threads is normal. So is the reverse.

When the unfollows are simply unfollows

Real unfollows behave nothing like either of the causes above. They arrive slowly, a handful a day, they tend to follow something you posted, and Threads never tells you about them. If your number drifts down over a fortnight while your following list is intact and the app is behaving normally, that is the audience making a choice, and the answer has to do with what you have been posting.

Be careful at this point. This is the moment people install a tracker app promising to name everyone who unfollowed them, and most of those ask you to sign in with your Instagram credentials. Handing your login to a stranger is one of the more reliable ways to lose the account outright. No tool has legitimate access to that list, because Threads does not publish it.

What to do while the app is misbehaving

Update the app first. Fixes for this class of bug ship inside a client update surprisingly often. Then leave the thing alone. When you need to confirm something, check your following list, since individual profiles are the part that is broken.

Two things to avoid. Do not refollow in bulk. Racing through two hundred profiles in ten minutes looks like automation to the same systems that police spam, and earning a temporary restriction on following while you are trying to repair a display bug is a genuinely miserable way to spend a Tuesday. Do not log out either, unless you are completely certain of your password and have your two factor method to hand. Signing back in during a wobbly period is how a small annoyance turns into a locked account.

If you already tapped and lost real follows

There is no undo. No notification went out either, so the other person has no idea it happened. Rebuild it slowly. Ten or fifteen a day, spread across the day, is invisible to the spam systems. Your following list is still the record of who is missing, so work from that.
