When your Reddit upvotes disappeared an hour after posting, four separate mechanisms could be responsible and people call all four of them fuzzing. Only one of them is. Vote fuzzing is small and constant by design, and it cannot take a post from three hundred back down to nine. A hidden score window changes what is displayed without touching a single vote. Retroactive invalidation, where Reddit decides a set of votes was not independent and strips them along with the karma they created, is what sits behind nearly every large collapse. Ordinary downvotes from a bigger audience are the fourth. The timing and the shape of the drop tell you which one you are looking at.

What vote fuzzing actually does, and what it cannot do
Reddit deliberately adds noise to the vote numbers it shows you. The reason is spam defence. If somebody running a farm of accounts could read an exact score after each vote, they would know precisely which of their accounts still count and which have been quietly neutralised. Fuzzing breaks that feedback loop by making the displayed number an approximation of the real one, permanently, on every post including yours.
The size is the part that matters. Fuzzing nudges a score by a few points in either direction and it never settles. Refresh a young post twice inside a minute and the number can move without a single human being involved. What fuzzing does not do is remove a hundred points in one step and leave them removed. If your post lost most of its score and stayed down there, cross fuzzing off your list and keep reading.
A score that was hidden was never taken away
Subreddits can hide scores for a stretch of time after a post goes up, and moderators choose how long that lasts. While it is running you see a dot or a dash where the number should be, or wording telling you the score is hidden. When the window closes the real figure appears.
This gets misread in both directions. Some people watch the number arrive and think the post suddenly caught fire. Others watched a score climb, then saw it replaced by a hidden marker because a moderator changed a setting mid thread, and read that as a wipe. In neither case did anything happen to the votes. The tell is simple: with a hidden score the number is missing rather than smaller.
Retroactive invalidation is the one that actually erases points
Here is the mechanism nobody enjoys hearing about. Reddit does not simply count votes. It also judges them, and it keeps judging them after your post has been sitting there for hours. When the system concludes that a batch of votes was not independent, it removes those votes after the fact and takes back the karma they produced. Sometimes that happens within minutes. Very often it happens overnight, which is why so many posts appear to lose everything while their author was asleep.
Not independent covers more ground than most people expect. A ring of accounts voting in the same pattern is the obvious case, and it is not the one that catches ordinary users. What catches ordinary users is sharing the direct link in a group chat, a Discord server or a work channel and asking friends to go and support the post. That feels like promotion from where you are standing. From where Reddit is standing it looks like an off platform vote drive. Several accounts voting from one home or one office connection can land in the same bucket without anybody intending anything.
Now the part to take seriously. Vote manipulation is one of the few problems on Reddit that reaches past the individual post. Do it repeatedly and the account can be suspended, and the website you keep linking to can end up filtered across the platform, which is slow and awkward to reverse. If your posts keep collapsing a few hours after you share them externally, the answer is to stop sharing the link that way and start posting as a genuine participant in the subreddit. Do not spin up a second account to test whether the theory is true. That is precisely the behaviour the detection is built around.
Sometimes it is just people disagreeing with you
A post that performs in its first hour gets pushed to a much larger and much less sympathetic audience. Early voters are subreddit regulars who chose to be there and already like the topic. Later voters are everybody scrolling a home feed at speed with less patience. A decline that arrives gradually, moves in step with the comment section turning against you and never quite recovers is plain disagreement doing its job.
You were expecting me to say this is the rarest cause, right? It is the most common one by a distance. It simply does not feel mysterious, so nobody writes a thread asking about it, and every discussion you find about disappearing upvotes was written by the people whose posts fell over for one of the other three reasons.
The upvote ratio and the score are measuring different things
This trips up everybody at least once. A post shows two hundred points alongside a ninety per cent upvote ratio, the arithmetic refuses to work, and the natural conclusion is that Reddit is lying about something. The two figures come from different places. The score you see has been fuzzed before it reached your screen. The ratio is worked out from the underlying votes and then rounded, so it sits closer to reality than the score does.
So use the ratio when you want to know how a post is being received. A ratio sliding from ninety eight down to sixty across an hour means real readers are voting against you. A ratio that stays high while the score collapses means votes were taken away rather than opposed, and that points straight back at invalidation.

Five checks that settle it
- Look at the post karma on your profile. If it fell by roughly the amount the post lost, the votes were invalidated rather than reversed.
- Compare the upvote ratio now with what you remember. A steady ratio next to a collapsed score means removal.
- Open the post in a private browser window while logged out. If it is not there, it was taken down and no amount of vote analysis will help.
- Check your Reddit inbox and the subreddit modmail for a removal message.
- Think back over the last few hours. Did you share the link somewhere and ask people to vote? That timing is the strongest clue you will get.
What actually protects a post
None of this is fixable after the fact, which is annoying but worth knowing. Invalidated votes do not come back. What you can change is the conditions on the next post. Give it to the subreddit first and let the regulars decide whether it deserves to travel, because votes that arrive from inside the community are the ones the system treats as real. Post when that subreddit is awake rather than when your own timezone happens to be convenient. Answer the early comments, since a post with a live author holds attention long enough to reach the wider feed on its own. None of that is glamorous and all of it beats the shortcut.
And when the score does wobble by five points ten minutes after posting, ignore it completely. That one really is fuzzing, it is happening to every other post on the page at the same moment, and it is the only version of this problem that means nothing at all.
