You Are Probably Not Shadowbanned, TikTok Has Six Real States That Look Like It

There is no switch anywhere inside TikTok labelled shadowban, and no support agent can confirm that you have one. What exists instead is a short list of named states, and every one is checkable from your own phone in about four minutes. Open Settings and privacy, tap Account, then open Account Status. That screen lists your warnings, your violations, any content removed and any restrictions currently sitting on your account features. A clean Account Status means you are not banned and not restricted, so whatever you are seeing is happening at the video level or is not enforcement at all. Being shadowbanned on TikTok is the phrase people reach for when views collapse, but the app will show you which of six real states you are in, and each needs a different response.

Account Status is the first screen to open and it settles half the question

From your profile, tap the three lines in the top corner, then Settings and privacy, then Account, then Account Status. What you get is a record rather than an opinion. Warnings appear on it, and so do removed videos and any feature restrictions with their end dates attached.

A second screen is worth checking straight afterwards. Go back into Settings and privacy, open Support, then Safety Centre, then Account check. This one walks through your account feature by feature, showing a tick where there is no problem and a warning sign where there is. It is the quickest way to discover that your commenting is restricted while your posting is completely fine, which is the split that convinces people the whole account is under a cloud.

One caveat. Both screens describe your account at the moment you look, and TikTok reviews content after it goes up, so a report filed tomorrow about a video from March changes what they say.

Six states get called the same thing and they are not the same thing

State What you actually see Where TikTok tells you
Permanent ban You cannot log in, or a ban notice appears when the app opens The notice itself, with an appeal option on it
Temporary restriction You are logged in but a feature is off, often commenting, LIVE or posting Account Status, and Account check
A single video removed One video is gone and everything else behaves normally A notification naming the policy, and Account Status
Not eligible for the For You feed The video plays fine from your profile, but almost nobody new sees it A notice on the post, usually carrying an appeal link
Search invisibility Your handle or your videos do not come up when other people search Nowhere. You have to test for this one
Age restriction Adults only on a video, or features missing because the account is registered as under eighteen A restricted notice, or the absent feature

A seventh outcome is by far the most common. Nothing is wrong, and the video simply did not hold enough people through its first few hundred impressions to earn any more. Nothing to appeal there.

Three tests will give you evidence instead of a feeling

Once Account Status comes back clean, gather your own data.

Search your own handle while logged out. Open a private browsing window, go to tiktok.com and search your exact username. If your profile comes up, you are indexed. If it appears but your recent videos never show under their captions or their sound, you are looking at a per video distribution problem rather than an account level one. Search results shift by region, so treat this as a strong signal rather than as proof.

Post a control video. Make it deliberately boring. Film it inside the TikTok camera so it carries no watermark, use no imported sound, put no link in it, and write a plain caption with no hashtags that might be carrying baggage. A control video that performs normally while your usual uploads die tells you the problem lives in your content rather than in your account, and that is genuinely good news.

Read the traffic sources on your last ten videos. This is the real diagnostic and hardly anybody uses it. Go to Creator tools, then Analytics, then Content, tap a video and scroll to Traffic sources under video views. You get a split across For You, Following, Personal profile, Search, Sound and Hashtag.

  • Almost every view from Personal profile and Following, with For You close to zero: that video was never recommended.
  • A healthy For You share but a low total: it was recommended and people left early. That is a hook problem.
  • Weeks of videos all showing a collapsed For You share, on an account with a clean status: that is the pattern people mean by reduced distribution.

Analytics only holds sixty days, so take your screenshots now.

Reduced distribution is real, and TikTok publishes what causes it

TikTok does not use the word shadowban. It does say that content breaking no rules but sitting outside its eligibility standards will not be recommended. These are the documented triggers.

  • Watermarks from other apps. TikTok has been explicit that reuploads carrying another platform’s watermark get less distribution. Export a clean file out of your editor.
  • Near duplicate posts. Deleting a video and putting the identical file back up reads as a duplicate rather than as a fresh attempt, and duplicates get no second run.
  • Borderline content. Material that breaks nothing but sits close to the line on adult themes or dangerous acts stays up and stays out of the feed.
  • Sounds you are not licensed for. Business accounts are limited to the commercial music library, and a track outside it can be muted.
  • Where your link in bio goes. The page at the other end forms part of your account’s record, and a destination that breaks the rules drags the account with it.

Bought engagement belongs on this list too, and the timing is what matters most. TikTok’s guidelines name inauthentic engagement as a violation, and an account already carrying a live restriction is the worst possible moment for a burst of activity to arrive from nowhere.

This next bit is the serious one, so read it before you spend anything. Search for a shadowban fix and you will find services offering to lift yours, asking for your TikTok login so they can clear the flags. There are no flags to clear. What changes hands is a live session on an account you may still be appealing, and an account somebody else can post from can collect the exact violation you were trying to avoid.

The reset everybody recommends does not exist

Search this problem and the first advice you meet is to delete the app for forty eight hours and let the algorithm reset itself. You were expecting me to pass that along, right? There is nothing to reset. Nothing in TikTok’s enforcement system responds to your absence, and a week away is a week of not generating the recent performance data the recommendation system reads when it decides how hard to push your next upload.

The tricks circulating alongside it fare no better. Switching to a business account and back clears nothing, and neither does going private for a day or posting through a VPN, which only adds a login from an unfamiliar place to an account under review. If your Account Status is clean and your control video travelled, the honest diagnosis is that your recent uploads are not holding attention. The fix for that is a better first three seconds.

Appealing is one form and sending it repeatedly does not speed it up

When there is genuinely something to appeal, the button sits on the thing being appealed. Open the notification about the removed video or the restriction and the appeal option is on it. Items in Account Status carry the same option. If you cannot find it, go to Profile, then the menu, then Settings and privacy, then Report a problem. TikTok also runs a feedback form at tiktok.com/legal/report/feedback taking your username, a contact email, your explanation and screenshots.

Write it like a case file rather than a complaint. Name the video, name the policy TikTok cited, and explain why the content does not meet it. Then leave it alone, because a second identical appeal moves you up no queue.

Strikes come off your record ninety days after they were issued, provided nothing new lands meanwhile. Thresholds count per feature and per policy area, so strikes against comments accumulate separately from strikes against LIVE, and a handful in one narrow category can end an account that looks healthy overall. A small set of categories carries a permanent ban on the first offence, and threatening violence is in it.

Work through it in this order

  1. Open Account Status. If it is clean, you are not banned and not restricted, and half the question is answered.
  2. Open the videos that underperformed and look for a notice on each. An eligibility notice is a per video problem with an appeal button attached.
  3. Search your handle from a logged out browser to rule out the search case.
  4. Post one deliberately plain control video and give it forty eight hours.
  5. Read the traffic sources on your last ten posts: are you not being recommended, or not being watched?
  6. Appeal once on anything carrying an appeal button, then get back to posting.

The shadowban story travels so well because it explains a bad month without asking anything of you. The screens above are less comforting and considerably more useful, and they settle the argument in four minutes.
