How to Reset the Instagram Algorithm in 2026 and Take Back Your Feed

The one official button that wipes your Explore, Reels, and suggested feed clean, plus how to retrain it in a week so it stops feeding you junk.

Quick note before we dive in: this article is about fixing what YOU see. If your problem is the opposite, your own posts suddenly reaching nobody, that is a completely different beast with a different fix. Go read Why your Instagram reach dropped instead, then come back and we will still be here.

So your feed has become a landfill. Explore is all rage-bait and things you would never search for out loud. Reels keeps showing you that one type of video you watched once at 2am and now regrets. And you have tried everything the internet told you.

Delete the app and reinstall it, right? Clear the cache. Log out, log back in, do a little digital cleanse. Maybe even nuke the whole account and start fresh with a clean slate, like moving to a new town where nobody knows about your questionable Reels history.

You were expecting me to nod along to all that, weren’t you? 😄

Here is the truth: almost none of that works, and I will show you exactly why later. But first, let me hand you the actual tool, the real one, that Instagram itself built for this exact situation.

The one official button: Reset suggested content

Instagram has a feature literally called Reset suggested content. It clears the recommendation signals behind all three of the places that go bad: Explore, Reels, and the suggested posts in your Feed. Not one of them. All three.

Here is the path. This is mobile app only, so grab your phone. It does not exist on the desktop site.

  1. Go to your Profile
  2. Tap the three-line menu (top right)
  3. Settings and activity
  4. Content preferences
  5. Reset suggested content
  6. Next
  7. It will offer to let you review the accounts you follow and your ad topics. You can go through them, or just skip for now.
  8. Confirm

That is it. This rolled out worldwide through 2025 after being announced in November 2024 (originally framed around teen safety, but it works for everyone). You can do it as many times as you like.

One serious thing before you tap it, and I mean genuinely pay attention here: this cannot be undone. There is no back button on a reset. Once you confirm, those signals are gone. That is not a scare tactic, it is just how it works, and you should know it going in.

What it actually feels like afterward

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, was refreshingly honest about this. He said the reset “will make your Instagram much less interesting at first, because we’re going to treat you as if we know nothing about you.”

Read that again, because it is the whole point. You are choosing amnesia on purpose. For a little while your feed becomes bland, generic, personality-free. Then, as you use the app, it re-personalizes around who you actually are now instead of who you were during that one weird week.

One more thing it does that people forget: it also wipes your old “Not interested” marks. So stuff you buried months ago can crawl back out of the ground. Annoying, but temporary, and you will re-bury it in a minute.

And here is what it leaves completely untouched, so you can relax:

  • Accounts you follow
  • Saved posts and collections
  • Your likes
  • Your DMs
  • Your own posts
  • Your followers
  • Your ad preferences

So this is not the scary account-nuke. It is a targeted wipe of the recommendation brain only.

Now the part most people skip: retraining it

Here is where I get a little stern, because this is the difference between a feed that heals and a feed that goes right back to garbage in three days.

The reset is not the finish line. It is a blank page. If you tap Confirm and then go back to your same lazy scrolling habits, you are just teaching it the same bad lesson all over again. So for about a week, you retrain it on purpose. 💪

Clear your search history. Old searches are loud signals. Go to Your activity > Recent searches > Clear all.

Use “Not interested” like a tool, not a tantrum. Tap it on Reels and posts you do not want. Every tap is you talking.

Engage with the good stuff. Like, comment, and save the things you genuinely want more of. The algorithm reads engagement as “yes, more please.”

Watch your dwell time. This is the sneaky one. How long you linger on something is a signal, even if you never tap anything. So when a post you dislike shows up, do not sit there hate-watching it. Scroll past fast. Staring is a vote.

Bypass recommendations entirely when you want a clean scroll. Use Favorites, and use the chronological Following feed by tapping the Instagram logo (top left). This shows you the people you chose, in order, no algorithm middleman.

Fine-tune with “Your Algorithm.” This one launched in December 2025. Go to Reels settings > Your Algorithm and you can toggle specific topics on and off directly. It is the closest thing to a steering wheel Instagram has ever given you.

How long until it feels normal again

Patience, because different surfaces heal at different speeds:

  • Reels shift fastest, usually a day or two.
  • Feed and Explore take longer, roughly a week.

Instagram has not published official timing windows, so treat those as what to expect, not a stopwatch guarantee. If Explore is still a little off on day three, that is normal. Keep training.

The myths I promised to debunk

Remember all those “solutions” from the intro? Here is why they are wishful thinking.

Reinstalling the app, clearing the cache, logging out and back in. Does nothing to your recommendations. Your profile does not live on your phone. It lives on Meta’s servers, tied to your account, not your device. You could throw your phone in a lake and log in on a new one, and the exact same feed would greet you like nothing happened.

Making a brand-new account for a “cleaner” feed. I understand the temptation, but this is a trap. A new account is a cold start, which means generic, low-quality slop until it learns you from zero. And in exchange for that downgrade, you lose your follows, your DMs, and your saves. You are not escaping the algorithm, you are just starting a worse relationship with it while abandoning everything you built.

The one line to remember

Reset once. Then spend a week actively retraining it.

That is the whole philosophy in a sentence. The reset gives you a clean slate, but the slate stays clean only if you teach it well. You are in charge here. You train the algorithm, not the other way around. 🎯

Go take your feed back.
